Christmas came a little late for five deputies at the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Melvin Andrews announced that he had received a $2000 grant from Walmart that funded the purchase of 5 ballistic proof vests for the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Andrews stated that 3 of the vests also had a special protection against sharp objects such as knives. Sheriff Andrews stated that a total of 13 vests were purchased in 2017 from grants that were awarded to the Sheriff’s Office.

In 2016 a total of 64 law enforcement officers were killed by firearm-related deaths in the line of duty. This is a 56% increase in deaths from 2015 when a total of 41 law enforcement officers were killed. The numbers are expected to be even higher for 2017 with the recent increase in law enforcement deaths.
