The Elbert County boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will host Prince Avenue Christian in their regular season opener Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Inferno. The Blue Devils and Lady Devils will also play Madison County at home Friday night and Hart County in Hartwell Saturday night.
Marvin Denney of WSGC Sports says the Elbert boys return an experienced team for the 2017-18 season. “Coach Don Hurlburt, who did an unbelievable job last year with our kids, actually returns maybe seven of his top group of 10. He only lost two seniors, and will have the additions of two or three younger kids coming up. Coach Hurlburt is excited to get these guys together as a group for the start of the basketball season.”
Denney said the Lady Devils, however, faces a rebuilding challenge after losing several key players to graduation. “Coach Wes Greer has almost the exact opposite, with really a lot of losses. Strangely enough, most of the losses were in the front court. There’s a lot of guard play on this team, and talking with Coach Greer, he intends to play a different style of basketball with this group. You can look for him to play an exciting brand of basketball and get up and down the floor to take advantage of those guards.”
The Elbert boys and girls will face stiff competition from their fellow members of Region 8-AA. This region is unbelievable for basketball,” Denney said. “It’s going to be tremendously competitive and a lot of fun to come out and watch if you like good basketball.
WSGC Sports will broadcast all three nights of varsity basketball this week on 105.3 FM, wsgcradio.com and on your mobile device with the TuneIn Radio App. Join Marvin Denney, Robby Kidd and Heather Eaves for all the action.
