Elbert County Man dies in an accident Monday evening

An Elbert County man has died from injuries sustained in an accident at the intersection of the Athens highway and the Mineral Springs Road. According to Emergency Services director Chuck Almond, the call came in at 10:54 pm on Monday evening in which a vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign on Mineral Springs Road, ran across the highway and landed on the railroad tracks. Reports indicate that the vehicle had been resting on the tracks for a short time before being struck by a train.
The victim has been identified as 76-year-old Clayborn Lewis Jr. of a Sweet City road address. Elbert County first responders, EMS, sheriff’s deputies, and the Georgia state patrol arrived on the scene, treated the victim, and, extricated him from the vehicle with the jaws of life rescue tools. A life flight helicopter had been called to the scene and upon arrival transported Lewis to a Greenville hospital where he later died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
The investigation continues by the Georgia State Patrol, Elbert County Sheriff’s department and Elbert County coroner’s office.
