Elbert County School District addresses after-school bus incident 

On Friday, November 3, 2017, an Elbert County Elementary School student was discovered to be in possession of an unloaded firearm while on a school bus.
In a statement from the Elbert County Board of Education. ” The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and the situation was handled by transportation and school security staff in accordance with the District’s established safety procedures. Matters involving weapons are handled pursuant to Elbert County disciplinary policy and state law. In that regard, the District is not able to comment on any action taken with respect to any individual students.”

Elbert County Schools officials stated that they take very seriously any potential threat to the safety and well-being of our students and employees. “We have avenues in place for students to report any concerns or issues, and we encourage parents to speak with their children about safety and the importance of sharing information with a teacher or administrator if they become aware of any potential threats in their schools.”The Board reports it will continue to monitor our schools and buses to maintain a safe environment for our students, employees, and their families.
