Elbert County Sheriff’s Office investigates murder at Pyramind Petro

At least one suspect is in custody and according to a statement issued by Sheriff Melvin Andrews of the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, will be charged with murder.

Deputies received a call at approximately 4:01 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, in reference to a subject being assaulted at Pyramid Petro convenience store on Highway 72 West. Upon arrival by both the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office and Elbert County EMS, the victim was located the victim laying behind the store and unresponsive.

The victim was identified as Treston G. Smith, 32, of 1784 Jones Ferry Road and pronounced dead at the scene by Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond.

The investigation led to at least one suspect, who turned himself in to authorities on Thursday. In custody is Sherman Allen, 34, of a Porter Drive address. Andrews stated Allen would be charged with murder.

The body is expected to be transferred to the Georgia Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing, according to a Elbert County Sheriff’s Office statement.
