While rumors about the possibility of a regional landfill in Elbert County have already been rampant here, those rumors have crossed county borders now, alarming residents of neighboring Madison County.
Carlton resident Chip Chandler spoke at a recent meeting of the Madison County Board of Commissioners, asking the board to take a stand against the landfill by drafting a resolution against it.
According to Chandler, should large regional landfill come to fruition in Elbert County, some of the refuse, including toxic coal ash, would travel through Madison County on its way. Chandler noted loads destined for the landfill would be by both rail and truck.
Chandler told commissioners there was nothing for the county to gain by the proposed landfill project and everything to lose as he urged commissioners to voice their opposition to a regional landfill. While the board took no immediate action, some commissioners did voice concern over the possibility of coal ash being transported through the county.
