Elberton Man Killed in Quarry Accident

An Elberton man was killed Thursday while working in a granite quarry in Oglethorpe County  The Oglethorpe County Coroners office said Matthew Kantala of Elbert County died after a fall and a 16,000 pound piece of granite then fell on him. The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. at the Blue Sky Quarry located off Veribest Road in a northeastern section of the county, according to the Coroners Office,  Kantala was killed when he fell while drilling rock.  The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office said the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating.
