Elberton Woman Arrested for Stolen Checks

An Elberton woman has been arrested after attempting to open an account with stolen checks. The woman would have probably gotten away with the crime with the exception that the checks reportedly belonged to the bank teller’s aunt.

Hartwell police have arrested 20-year-old Lakendra Shantel Brown of Elberton. Hartwell officers were called to the South State Bank on Oct. 23.

Brown is being charged with 4th degree forgery.

Once the teller saw the name on the check, she immediately called her aunt to verify the validity of the check. The teller was informed that the account had been closed.

Reports also indicate that police are also searching for a possible second suspect in the incident.
The investigation continues by Hart County Authorities at this time.
