Friends helping Friends camp another success

The sixth annual Friends Helping Friends (FHF) VBS Camp hosted at Elberton Christian Church June 4-7th from 9 am until 2 pm each day was a huge success with over 100 participants ages 5 and up. Local churches, businesses and community volunteers worked together to provide an unforgettable week for some very special campers. Camp coordinators ECCHS FHF Sponsor Pam Brown, Elbert County (EC) Schools FHF Sponsor Chrystal Thomas, Friends Helping Friends Club, Inc. President Sandy Adams and EC Elementary School teacher Devon Davis were assisted by FHF Alumni Officers Brittani Akin (camp photographer), Cassidy Childs, Morgan Evans, Bella Fernandez, Maggie Hall/EC Elementary School teacher, Kaycie Oakley, Morgan Pless, Courtney Smith/EC Primary School teacher, Colby Thomas, Logan Vaughn and Brianna Vaughn.
Elbert Co (EC) Middle School FHF and EC High School FHF members paired with campers as they rotated from VBS lessons led by Brent Moon/Dewy Rose Baptist Church (DRBC) Youth Leader, crafts, dance, sports and then to the worship rally. After breakfast, campers enjoyed GoNoodle music and dance time. Campers enjoyed playing Bocce Ball & Corn Hole games coached by Jeff Adams, fun tennis lessons by Devon Davis, and basketball & Nine Square Volleyball.
Delicious breakfast and lunches were provided by PJ Phelps and Sherry Webb with First United Methodist; Mary Jane Denny/Salvation Army Canteen Truck; Mike, Phyllis & Nick Thompson, Lynn, Randy & Drew Saxon/J Carrs Catering; Dan McAvoy’s Sunday School Class at First Baptist with Don Fortson grilling Bubba Burgers on his big grill wagon; After the cookout on Tuesday, campers enjoyed a huge water slide inflatable set up by Jumping With Us. Jon & Tina Vickery donated delicious watermelons for the group; After the Pilot Club of Elberton served a “birddog” lunch to campers on Wednesday, they recruited a few FHF members who dressed in full costume and performed an animated skit on brain safety which captivated the audience. The Pilot Club also donated brain safety coloring books. Then campers enjoyed watching “Star” at the Historical Elbert Theatre with Toni King serving yummy snacks to the group; On the last day of camp Thursday, DRBC provided a delicious feast cooked by Barry Dye and Small Town Grill for 200 campers, FHF volunteers, FHF supporters, Emergency Medical Services, Elberton and Elbert Co Fire Dept., Sheriffs Dept., Elberton Police Dept., City of Elberton staff, Elbert County school administrators and personnel. Numerous meals were also delivered to those who could not attend the event.
Tom, Jane and FHF Founding Officer Katie McCall (EC Elementary School teacher) provided whistle bracelets for campers. DRBC Women’s Ministry/Kelly Jordan filled goodie bags with cool treats and school supplies for all campers. Gideon Bibles were provided to each camper by Everett Worley. All campers and volunteers received a patriotic red, white and blue 2018 FHF VBS camp shirt. Felecia Downer served as camp nurse. Donnie Criswell and Brett Seymour with Elberton Christian Church assisted throughout the week. Brent Moon/DRBC Youth Leader and Shirley Hughes/EC Paraprofessional graciously donated their time to provide transportation and assistance for campers along with Theresa Albertson, Kathy Brady, Stephanie Brown, Judy Davis, Robin Dutton, Brittany Fleeman and Cathy Smith.
