The competition gets stronger this week for the Elbert County Blue Devils as they travel to College Park to take on the state’s No. 2-ranked team in Class AA, the Hapeville Charter High School Hornets on Friday night in the second round of the state playoffs.
WSGC Sports analyst Marvin Denny gives this scouting report on Hapeville Charter: “Over the last 10 ballgames, they’ve given up a total of 18 points. Needless to say, this is a highly skilled team. This is really a test for Elbert County Friday night.” He said the Hornets’ defense is led by cornerback Chris Smith, a Georgia Bulldogs commit for next season. Quarterback Hajj-malik Williams, at 6-2, 190 pounds, reminds Denny of former Clemson sensation Deshaun Watson.
Denny said the Blue Devils will need to play at a high level to in order to defeat the Hornets and advance in the playoffs. “Coach Sid Fritts, as he has done so often, has been able to get his teams to play well in the playoffs. It seems like when we get to this time of year, we are about as good as we can be, and that’s the sign of great coaching. I think for us to be in the game, we’ve just got to be as good as we can be. We can’t make the mistakes, the turnovers, and be real consistent as a football team.”
Kickoff time Friday at Benjamin Banneker High School Stadium in College Park is 7:30.
