Jennings found guilty of murder in grandfather’s death

An Elbert County Superior Court jury of seven women and five men deliberated for about 90 minutes Monday before convicting Savanna Marie Jennings in the January 2018 shooting death of her 86-year-old grandfather. The verdict was announced at approximately 4:30 p.m.
At the request of both defense and prosecuting attorneys, Northern Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge R. Chris Phelps ordered sentencing to be held at a later date after Jennings was found guilty on all charges of murder, felony murder, malice murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and concealing a death.
Jennings is the only one of three defendants whose case went to trial. In July 2018, William David Peterson of Athens pleaded guilty, admitting he shot 86-year-old Otha Perrin six times with Perrin’s .22-caliber rifle in January 2018. Under a negotiated plea agreement, Peterson was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Phelps and will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years in prison.
In August 2018, Dakota Scott Street pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and concealing a death, all in connection with the Perrin slaying. Street was sentenced to 45 years, with the first 30 to be served in prison.
Jennings, who lived at her grandfather’s residence on Pearl Mill Road, originally reported to Elbert County Sheriff’s Officers on January 7, 2018, that Perrin was missing. The next day, another family member came to the Sheriff’s Office and said that “something isn’t right” about the missing person’s case.
During questioning, investigators said Jennings eventually broke down and admitted she had been deceitful in her answers. Perrin’s body was recovered on January 8 from a pond on private farm property off Wahatchee Creek Road. Officers also recovered a .22 caliber rifle on the farm property near the pond where the body was recovered.
