Lavender pitches no-hitter against Rabun County

diamond-devils-040417Elbert County Blue Devil Daniel Lavender pitched a no-hitter against a tough Rabun County team on Tuesday evening. Lavender walked two batters and hit one batsman in the 6-0 win. Lavender also recorded nine strikeouts in the seven inning complete game win.

The game could have been much closer if not for fielding mistakes by Rabun County. Elbert County scored one run in the second inning off of one hit and one walk to go up 1-0. The run scored when Colton Moon walked and was moved to third on a Daniel Lavender ground-rule double. Cole Hart then perfectly executed a squeeze play bunt as Moon raced home, scoring the game’s first run and giving Hart a sacrifice RBI.

In the third inning, Rabun’s pitcher made two throwing errors and gave up a passed ball. Those mistakes, along with a fielding error, this one on the first baseman, led to the Blue Devils scoring five runs, none of them earned. The Blue Devils only had two hits in the midst of all of the Rabun mistakes, both singles by Justin Anderson and Payton Adams.

Adams and Avery Hunt singled in the fourth inning but a double-play ended Elbert’s chances for scoring that inning.

Elbert County is currently leading the region by two games over Social Circle and with two games remaining in the regular season cannot finish worse than tied for first place.

The Blue Devils will host George Walton Academy, a team that handed them a loss earlier in the season, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be aired live on WSGC radio.
