Madison County shooting suspect nabbed in Elberton



harper-arrestAfter receiving a report on Thursday evening from Madison County that a suspect wanted in connection to a shooting may be in the Elberton area, officers from the Elberton Police Department spotted and arrested Steve Michael Allen (aka Steven Michael Harper) of Hull at the “Tiger Mart” Citgo station located at 310 Elbert St.


According to a press release by Elberton Police Chief Mark Welsh, Sergeant Jordan Scotland spotted the vehicle in question, a blue late-1980s Chevrolet pickup at approximately 6:15 p.m. and initiated a traffic stop. Scotland also called for backup and waited for their arrival before approaching the vehicle. According to EPD personnel, Allen (Harper) was not armed and taken into custody without incident.


Allen  (Harper) is suspected of shooting a 39-year-old woman earlier in the day at the Golden Pantry convenience store just off Highway 29 in the Dogsboro Community. The victim was shot in the lower body/leg area with a handgun. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment. According to reports the shooting happened as the result of a domestic dispute.Once in custody at the Elberton Police Department, Madison County officials were notified and Allen (Harper) was transferred into their custody.

Welsh said the department also received assistance from the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol.
