Missouri Police Officer Shot, Suspect in Custody, Officials Say

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) --  A suspect accused of shooting a police officer in Ballwin, Missouri this morning has been taken into custody, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

The Ballwin Police Department officer who was shot has been transported to a local hospital, where he is receiving life-saving treatment, St. Louis County PD wrote on Twitter.

The department, which said it is investigating the shooting of the officer, added on Twitter that a weapon has been recovered. Additional details were not immediately available.

Meanwhile, several community leaders and police departments have been expressing messages of support.

Missouri congresswoman Ann Wagner tweeted, "Please join me in praying for the @BallwinPolice officer shot this morning & all our law enforcement officers. May God bless & protect them."

Steve Stenger, a St. Louis County executive, wrote on Twitter, "Thank you to all agencies for quick response and investigation in Ballwin. @stlcountypd Suspect apprehended and weapon recovered."

 The St. Louis County PD and Ballwin PD did not immediately return ABC News' requests for additional information.
