Results Of Monday’s Commissioners Meeting

In a packed meeting room Monday evening the Elbert County Board of Commissioners took, what some in the audience called a “courageous” move to vote in favor of funding the future of Elbert Memorial Hospital with 2.5 mills of funding from the county.
Commission Chairman Tommy Lyon got the ball rolling saying “if we don’t keep Elbert Memorial our County would look like other “Lost” Counties and Cities who once had 3500 people and were now down to 75 people in the State of Georgia.”

Voting in favor of the Hospital were commissioners Harper, Vaughn and Jones. Voting against the Hospital matter were Commissioners Alexander and Ashworth.

The Board also agreed to a 1/2 mill of funding for Economic Development specifically a spec building for Elbert County with all commissioners voting in favor of this motion except Commissioner Alexander voting no on this measure at the meeting.
Voting in favor of the Hospital were commissioners Harper, Vaughn and Jones. Voting against the Hospital matter were Commissioners Alexander and Ashworth.

The Board also agreed to borrow funds from Northeast Georgia Bank for a “Tax Anticipation Note” to be paid back by December of 2017.

The Board also agreed to the purchase of a Brush truck for the fire department and approved a number of smaller matters such as appointments to various boards and zoning issues.
