State tournament at The Inferno tonight: Blue Devils vs. Rockmart

The Elbert County Blue Devils will host Rockmart in the second round of the state Class AA basketball tournament at 7 o’clock tonight in The Inferno. According to former Blue Devil and now WSGC’s Voice of the Basketball Devils, Marvin Denney, it’s a Sweet 16 rematch 44 years in the making.
“Rockmart has a great tradition of basketball,” Denney said, “as we know from our girls playing them as well as, if you’ll look through the history, and I can go all the way to 1975 when in the Sweet 16 we actually played them then. It was a game we played in Atlanta and came away with a hard-fought win. So this will be a challenge. Everybody is shooting for our boys, who are highly ranked.”
Rockmart, the Region 7-AA runner-up, poses a strong challenge for the Region 8-AA champion Blue Devils, Denney said.
“I got to watch a little bit of Rockmart on video, and they are really skilled,” Denney said. “They shoot the ball very well. This is an opportunity to get to the Elite Eight, so it’s win now or go home.”
A victory for Elbert County tonight would advance the Blue Devils to the state quarterfinals, where they would host an Elite Eight matchup between the winner of Thomasville and unbeaten Woodville-Tompkins of Savannah.
“I know Coach Hurlburt would want us to have that place packed out,” Denney said, “and maybe an opportunity next week to take on a really special team in a game that might quite possibly be in The Inferno in its own right.”
Catch tonight’s state tournament action at 7 p.m. at The Inferno or on 105.3 WSGC with Marvin Denney, Robbie Kidd and Heather Denney.
