(FRESNO, Calif.) -- Three people are dead after an Amtrak passenger train struck a pickup truck in California Friday afternoon, Amtrak California officials confirmed.
Amtrak train 713 was traveling from Bakersfield to Oakland when it struck a farm truck about 15 miles north of Fresno near a private vineyard around 12:30 p.m. local time, Amtrak said. There were 217 people on the train, including the crew.
The three people who died were in the truck, according to Amtrak.
It is unclear why the truck was in the track, Amtrak said. The track is located in a private crossing, which does not have arms to block vehicles from entering the track ahead of an oncoming train.
The train sustained minor damage to the headlights, according to Amtrak, and was delayed for more than three hours.
