Trooper involved in Elbert County shooting identified

getty_101916_policelights.jpegThe Georgia State Patrol trooper who was involved in a fatal shooting this past Thursday evening was identified on Monday as Justin Larry Ray of Hart County. The 2009 graduate of Hart County High School was assigned to Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell. He had been with the post for four months.

Ray shot and fatally wounded 24-year-old Edwin Amaya Maldonado during a traffic stop on Oct. 27 at approximately 7:45 p.m. According to preliminary reports released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Maldonado resisted arrest and reached for the trooper’s gun belt when Ray attempted to place him under arrest. Ray then fired his weapon once, striking Maldonado in the torso.

Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond pronounced Maldonado dead at the scene.

A number of media outlets, including WSGC Radio, have requested release of the video footage of the incident but so far the GBI has refused all requests, stating the video will not be released while the “criminal investigation” is ongoing.
