Republican Jamie Callaway will become the next sheriff of Elbert County, defeating Democratic candidate Darren Scarborough in Tuesday’s election by a margin of 606 votes. Callaway, who secured a total of 5,032 votes, will make history as the first Republican to hold the office of sheriff in Elbert County.
While there are a few provisional ballots still under review, they are not expected to alter the final outcome of the race, according to election officials. Callaway’s victory marks a significant shift in the county's political landscape, as Elbert County has traditionally leaned Democratic in past sheriff races.
"I'm incredibly thankful and humbled by the support from the citizens of Elbert County," Callaway said in a statement following his win. "I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, votes, and support. We are excited to make the changes we’ve promised to bring, including those that the community has expressed a desire to see. We're looking forward to taking office in January and seeing what the Lord has planned for us. God bless."
Callaway’s career in law enforcement spans over three decades, beginning in 1992 when he was just 19 years old. Over the years, he has worked alongside several past sheriffs in Elbert County. After graduating from the police academy in 1995, Callaway has held various positions within law enforcement, gaining valuable experience and insight into the needs and challenges facing the county.
His win is seen as a turning point in Elbert County’s law enforcement, with many voters expressing support for his promises to improve community safety, increase transparency, and bring attention to the animal shelter.
"We’re ready for a change and excited about the future," Callaway added. "It's going to be a new chapter for Elbert County, and we can’t wait to get started."
Callaway will officially take office as sheriff in January 2025, following a ceremonial transition. His supporters are optimistic about the changes he plans to implement and the direction he will take the sheriff's office in the coming years.
